Then ISO 45001:2018 is the certification for you.
ISO 45001 specifies requirements for an occupational health and safety (OHSAS) management system. It enables organisations to provide safe and healthy workplaces by preventing work-related injury/ill health and proactively improving OH&S performance. Benefits include:
- A more disciplined and structured approach to safety;
- A reduction in lost working days;
- Fewer workplace accidents;
- Fewer medical claims;
- Less time and money spent on accident-related investigation and paperwork;
- Recognition by insurers and regulators;
- Recognition by potential clients (i.e. in Tender processes);
- Improved employee motivation, retention and satisfaction;
- Reduced legal costs.
Familiar with other ISO Standards?
As with other ISO standards, 45001 revolves around the Plan, Do, Check, Act (PDCA) cycle, minimising the risk of workplace harm. Organisations must examine external and internal influencing factors and expectations of stakeholders such as employees, customers, suppliers or contractors. This all feeds into the overall risk assessment process. In addition, ISO45001 requires involvement at all levels of an organisation; for example, consultation and participation with employees is important but the standard also places a focus on commitment from top level management.
Already Certified to OHSAS 18001?
If so, then much of the hard work is already done. Essentially, many of the requirements of the OHSAS system will still apply but there will be additional work necessary to meet the requirements of the new standard. ISO 45001:2018 replaces OHSAS 18001 over a 3-year migration period to March 2020.
